Start with the itinerary
A compact car can be a practical option when the route uses established roads and the accommodation has straightforward access. The important question is not whether Costa Rica is mountainous, but which roads your particular trip includes.
Send the complete hotel list to the rental company before choosing. A single steep or rough driveway can change an otherwise simple itinerary.
Check the full luggage load
Describe the number and size of suitcases as well as the passenger count. Two travelers with large hard-shell cases and sports equipment have different needs from two travelers using small bags.
Confirm that luggage can fit securely without blocking visibility or occupying a needed seat. Keep valuables out of view, and avoid planning to solve a space problem after collection.
Consider the daily experience
A smaller car can be convenient in town parking and for a couple using straightforward routes. Longer transfers, rear-seat passengers and child equipment may make another category more comfortable.
Ask about the actual category's transmission and equipment rather than assuming every model is identical. Availability of a specific model should be confirmed under the booking terms.
Know when to change the choice
Review a higher-clearance vehicle if the itinerary includes rough access or properties that recommend it. Choose 4x4 when the actual access specifically requires that drivetrain.
A compact car should never be taken through a route the rental company or host says is unsuitable. Adjust the vehicle or accommodation before travel rather than treating the road as a challenge.
Before you go
- Share every hotel entrance and access requirement.
- Confirm passenger, luggage and equipment capacity.
- Verify drivetrain rather than relying on the SUV label.
- Review the actual booking terms before collection.
