A broad route with room to pause
This itinerary combines forest and coastal stays without a hotel change every night. It assumes SJO arrival and departure. The first night remains near the airport, giving the rental handover and long first transfer their own daylight schedule.
Days 1–4: Arrival and La Fortuna
Stay near SJO on Day 1. On Day 2, collect the vehicle as arranged and drive to La Fortuna for three nights. Use Days 3 and 4 for nature, hot springs or an adventure activity selected around your interests.
Keep one main reservation per day and use the remaining time for meals and rest.
Days 5–6: Monteverde
Use Day 5 as the mountain transfer day and stay two nights. On Day 6, choose a guided forest walk or another cloud forest experience. Add a nearby café or garden only if it fits comfortably.
Confirm the exact lodge approach and carry clothing for cooler weather.
Days 7–9: Manuel Antonio
Drive to the Central Pacific on Day 7 and stay three nights. Use one full day for the national park with advance official reservations and another for a beach or boat outing.
A relaxed schedule is useful in warm humid weather. Keep valuables with you and plan legitimate parking near the entrance.
Days 10–12: Uvita
Continue south to Uvita on Day 10 for three nights. Use the full days for Marino Ballena, a tide-aware beach visit or an operator-led marine excursion. Sightings and sea conditions remain variable.
Choose the vehicle according to the Uvita lodge driveway, which can be more demanding than the coastal highway.
Days 13–14: Return and fly home
Return to the Central Valley on Day 13 and spend the final night near SJO. Day 14 is for vehicle return and airport procedures.
If you prefer fewer drives, remove one base and add its nights elsewhere. The benefit of two weeks is time at the destinations, not the maximum number of towns.
Before you go
- Confirm every hotel's guest entrance and parking.
- Reserve important activities on full destination days.
- Check current road, park and ferry conditions as applicable.
- Protect the final airport transfer.

Recommended time
Transfer days are deliberately flexible. Check current routes and leave daylight for the final hotel approach.
VEHICLE GUIDANCE
Recommended vehicle
Choose the category after checking Monteverde and Uvita accommodation access. A hillside lodge may require 4x4 even when much of the trip follows main roads.
