Keep the Caribbean as the focus
This itinerary uses one main coastal base and avoids a cross-country dash to the Pacific. It is designed for travelers interested in local food, beaches and nature with time to adapt to the weather.
Days 1–2: Arrival and eastbound transfer
Stay near SJO on Day 1. On Day 2, review current road conditions before driving toward Limón and the South Caribbean. Save the exact Puerto Viejo de Talamanca hotel pin.
Treat the drive as the day's main task. Allow for traffic, breaks and the final coastal approach, and keep the evening unstructured.
Days 3–4: Puerto Viejo and surrounding beaches
Use the first full day to get oriented and enjoy local food and a nearby beach where conditions are suitable. Use the next for a guided nature experience or a different section of the coast.
Drive slowly through communities and give cyclists and pedestrians space. Do not assume every beach has the same swimming conditions.
Days 5–6: Cahuita and a flexible day
Choose a Cahuita outing after checking current access, meeting points and weather. If using a guide or marine activity, confirm what is included and how weather changes are handled.
Keep the remaining day open for rest or an activity you could not do earlier. Caribbean rainfall does not follow the Pacific calendar exactly.
Days 7–8: Return to SJO
Leave the coast on Day 7 and stay near SJO. Check the route before departure and follow official instructions if a closure affects the main road.
Return the vehicle and depart on Day 8. A final airport-area night is especially helpful after a region reached by a long transfer.
Before you go
- Confirm every hotel's guest entrance and parking.
- Reserve important activities on full destination days.
- Check current road, park and ferry conditions as applicable.
- Protect the final airport transfer.
