Choose the first stop by arrival time

Jacó is reached before Manuel Antonio when following the Central Pacific corridor south. That makes it a different first-day commitment, even if both are described as beach destinations near the capital.

Include immigration, bags, pickup, a meal and the final hotel approach when judging the day. If the schedule leaves little daylight, stay near SJO or choose a closer first stop.

Review the principal coastal route

The usual approach connects Route 27 and Route 34, continuing toward Quepos for Manuel Antonio. Ask about current conditions at collection and review the entire route before driving.

Carry a practical toll payment option and avoid accepting unfamiliar rural shortcuts. A shorter distance on a navigation screen can involve more difficult roads.

Make breaks part of the plan

Choose a safe, established stop for food or a rest. Keep passports, electronics and essential belongings with you. If the vehicle is carrying all your luggage, avoid turning a transfer stop into a lengthy unattended excursion.

Do not park on a bridge or road shoulder for photographs. Use a legitimate parking area where you can enter and leave safely.

Arrive without a fixed activity waiting

Book your first surf lesson or national park visit for a later day. Manuel Antonio park admission requires separate planning through the official reservation system; the arrival drive should not depend on meeting a park slot.

Before the last stretch, confirm the hotel's parking entrance and check-in details. A hillside property can require more careful driving than the coastal highway that brought you there.

Before you go

  • Save the confirmed pickup or return instructions offline.
  • Check the airport code and the rental location.
  • Allow time for luggage and vehicle handover.
  • Keep the first or final drive realistic.
