Money and payment
The official currency is the Costa Rican colón. Cards are useful in many hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and tourism businesses, but cash remains helpful for tolls, parking, small stores and rural services.
Carry a reasonable amount rather than a large quantity. Use secure locations and avoid displaying money in public.
SIM cards, eSIM and mobile data
International roaming, a local SIM or an eSIM can provide mobile data. Confirm compatibility and prices with the provider before traveling.
Download offline maps before beginning long routes. Mobile coverage may become limited in mountains, forests and remote coastal areas.
Weather and regional differences
Costa Rica has varied climates. Beaches can be hot and humid, mountain regions can be cool, and heavy rain can occur even when the morning begins with sunshine.
- Carry lightweight rain protection.
- Use sun protection.
- Pack light layers for higher elevations.
- Protect phones and documents from water.
- Keep flexible plans during periods of heavy rain.
What to pack
- Comfortable walking shoes.
- Light clothing and one warmer layer.
- Rain jacket or compact poncho.
- Sun protection and insect repellent.
- Reusable water container.
- Medication and copies of important information.
- Charging cables and any necessary adapter.
Electricity
Costa Rica commonly uses North American-style Type A and Type B electrical outlets with approximately 120-volt electricity.
Travelers from countries using different plugs or voltage should confirm whether their devices require an adapter or voltage converter.
Safety and belongings
Use supervised parking whenever available. Do not leave passports, electronics, luggage or other valuables visible inside a vehicle.
At beaches, trailheads and attractions, take essential belongings with you or keep them completely out of sight before arriving.
Language
Spanish is the official language. English is common in many tourism areas, but basic Spanish phrases are useful for fuel stations, restaurants, directions and unexpected situations.
Tipping and service charges
Review the bill before adding a tip because a service charge may already be included. Additional tipping can be used for exceptional service but should not be added automatically without checking.
Documents and backups
Keep original travel and driving documents secure and accessible when required. Store backup copies separately from the originals.
Save reservation confirmations, hotel addresses, insurance information and emergency contacts before departure.
Final preparation checklist
- Confirm passport and driver’s license validity.
- Save all reservation numbers.
- Download offline maps.
- Arrange mobile data.
- Carry some Costa Rican colones.
- Pack for rain, sun and changing elevation.
- Protect valuables and medication.
- Confirm the vehicle according to the complete itinerary.
Important information
Costa Rica has large differences in weather, road conditions and services between regions. Prepare for heat, rain and changing conditions even during the same trip.
How to get there
Keep confirmation numbers, addresses, offline maps and contact information available before leaving the airport or each hotel.
Recommended time
Review this checklist before departure and again before beginning any long transfer inside Costa Rica.

Pack for several climates in one trip
A Costa Rica itinerary can include a warm beach, a cool mountain area and heavy rain within the same week. Light layers and rain protection are usually more useful than packing for only one climate.
Carry a small amount of colones, download offline maps, protect electronics from rain and keep essential medication in hand luggage.
Do not leave passports, luggage, electronics or other valuables visible inside a parked vehicle.
