Choose Jacó for an easy beach base

Jacó suits travelers who want a lively beach town, restaurants and activities in one place. It can be a first Pacific stop after SJO or a short stay before continuing south. Choose your accommodation according to the holiday you want: central convenience, quieter surroundings or a hillside view.

A car is useful for reaching surrounding attractions, but you may not need to drive for every meal. Confirm whether you can walk comfortably from the hotel to the part of town you plan to use.

Driving from the Central Valley

The usual approach connects Route 27 with Route 34 toward the Central Pacific. Review current navigation before leaving the rental office and keep a payment option for tolls. Congestion leaving the Central Valley and returning on busy weekends can change the journey considerably.

Avoid assigning a non-refundable surf lesson to the afternoon of an international arrival. Immigration, baggage collection, pickup and traffic all come before the beach. If you arrive late or tired, start the coastal drive the next morning.

Surfing and nearby beaches

Book a lesson with an established surf school and describe your experience honestly. Conditions vary by tide, swell and beach section. Jacó and nearby Playa Hermosa should not be treated as interchangeable beginner locations; let a qualified instructor choose the appropriate place.

For a quieter day, combine a relaxed breakfast with a nature activity or a visit to the Herradura area. Keep excursions geographically close so the day does not become a series of drives. Swimming safety must be assessed on the day, even when the beach looks calm.

Parking and moving around town

Prefer accommodation with its own parking. At restaurants and beach access points, use authorized spaces and keep sidewalks, entrances and traffic lanes clear. A person offering parking help does not necessarily represent the municipality or the attraction.

Leave luggage at the hotel before spending time on the beach. Keep the key dry and secure, and avoid leaving electronics or travel documents in the vehicle. Arrange another form of transport if dinner includes alcohol.
