Separate short local trips from long transfers

A short drive on a familiar town route is different from several hours through mountains or rural roads after a flight. Base the decision on fatigue, lighting, weather and the actual road.

For a late airport arrival, a nearby overnight stay can simplify the first day. Confirm hotel check-in and pickup arrangements before travel.

Understand what darkness changes

Pedestrians, cyclists, animals, potholes and unlit road edges can be harder to see. Rain and fog reduce visibility further, while unfamiliar junctions take more attention.

Slow down to match what you can see and leave more space. Do not try to recover time lost earlier in the day by increasing speed on the final stretch.

Prepare the route before leaving

Confirm the destination entrance and parking, check the lights and set up navigation while parked. Ask the accommodation about the most straightforward approach.

If you are tired, stop. Coffee or an open window is not a reliable solution to fatigue. Arrange an alternative driver only when that person is authorized under the rental agreement.

Make the itinerary easier to follow

Book fewer distant stops and begin transfer days early. Keep fixed tours away from arrival afternoons, and allow extra time for meals and road delays.

For evenings with alcohol, arrange transport that does not require you to drive. If conditions become difficult, choose a safe established stopping place and contact the host rather than continuing into an unfamiliar access road.
