Routes 27 & 34: Driving from the Central Valley to the Pacific

Understand the connection

Route 27 links the Central Valley toward the Pacific, while Route 34 follows the coastal corridor toward destinations including Jacó, Quepos and Uvita. Your exact entry and exit points depend on the pickup office and hotel.

Preview the complete route before departure so you recognize the main junctions instead of reacting at the last second.

Prepare for tolls and changing traffic

Keep a practical payment option available before approaching a booth. Follow lane signs and do not enter a dedicated payment lane unless you have the required arrangement.

Traffic can be slower around the Central Valley, busy beach weekends and holiday travel periods. Plan using the current route estimate, then add time for breaks and the unexpected.

Choose stops deliberately

Use established parking and service areas for fuel, food and rest. Keep the shoulder clear, and do not stop on bridges or at blind bends for photographs.

If the car contains your full luggage, keep essential valuables with you and avoid leaving the vehicle unattended for a long attraction visit. A short meal stop is a different plan from several hours on a trail.

Expect local-road changes after the highway

The turn toward a beach, park or hotel can introduce narrow streets, pedestrians, steep climbs or gravel. Confirm the final approach with the property rather than assuming highway conditions continue to the door.

For a return before an international flight, work backward from the rental return and airline deadlines. Consider a final Central Valley overnight if the coastal drive would otherwise have no comfortable buffer.
