Start with the route, then compare flights
Write down the places you most want to visit and group them by region. A Guanacaste beach holiday and a Central Valley–Central Pacific trip can point toward different gateways. Compare the complete door-to-door plan rather than choosing only the cheapest flight.
The arrival airport affects the first day, but the departure airport can affect the final two days. Include both in your decision before reserving accommodation.
When SJO can fit well
SJO is in Alajuela and is useful for itineraries beginning in the Central Valley, continuing toward the Central Pacific or heading to other regions from that starting point. It can also support a route involving La Fortuna, provided the arrival schedule leaves realistic time for the transfer.
A hotel described as being in San José is not automatically close to SJO. Check the actual location and likely route.
When LIR can fit well
LIR is the Guanacaste gateway near Liberia and often simplifies a holiday focused on northwestern beaches. The right answer changes when you add distant regions: a geographically scattered itinerary can require substantial driving from either airport.
Check arrival time as well as airport location. A convenient airport paired with a very late flight may still justify an overnight stay before the beach transfer.
Evaluate a different arrival and departure airport
An open-jaw itinerary can reduce backtracking, but first confirm one-way rental availability, the exact return office, hours and any additional cost. Get those conditions in the booking rather than assuming they are standard.
Compare airfare, rental terms, an extra hotel night and the time saved on the road. Choose the combination that gives you a manageable first drive and protects the flight home.
Before you go
- Save the confirmed pickup or return instructions offline.
- Check the airport code and the rental location.
- Allow time for luggage and vehicle handover.
- Keep the first or final drive realistic.
