Measure the equipment

Tell the rental company the number, length and type of boards, including travel bags. Add the passengers and normal luggage to the request.

A board that fits an empty vehicle may not fit safely with passengers. Avoid choosing a category based only on a general description such as spacious.

Confirm an approved transport setup

Ask which equipment or carrying arrangement is allowed and available. Do not assume roof racks or straps are included. Use only a setup the provider approves for the vehicle.

Boards must not obstruct visibility, controls, restraints or exits. An improvised attachment can create a problem for both the equipment and the car.

Review the beach and lodging roads

A surf town's main access may differ from the road to a remote break or hillside lodge. Confirm the specific entrance and current conditions before deciding whether extra clearance or 4x4 is needed.

Do not drive on the beach, through an estuary or across a river to reach a break. Choose the established access route and legitimate parking.

Keep the daily routine simple

Unload equipment at the accommodation before unrelated outings when practical. Protect keys from water and keep essentials with you at the beach.

Follow the rental agreement's care and cleaning terms for sand and wet equipment. Arrange lessons or board hire locally if transporting your own boards would make the vehicle or itinerary unnecessarily difficult.
