Separate three different features

SUV describes a broad vehicle type. Ground clearance describes the space beneath the vehicle. Four-wheel drive describes a drivetrain capability. These features are related in some vehicles, but one label does not guarantee the others.

Ask the company to confirm the characteristics that matter for your route, especially if a hotel uses the word 4x4 in its access instructions.

Clearance answers one kind of problem

Ruts, uneven surfaces and abrupt driveway transitions can create clearance concerns. A higher vehicle may help with an appropriate road, but careful speed and route suitability still matter.

Clearance does not make a flooded crossing safe, and it does not establish permission to use a restricted road or drive on a beach.

Traction answers a different question

A steep loose driveway may create a traction issue even when the road is short. If the property says four-wheel drive is required, get that requirement reviewed before reserving.

Learn the assigned vehicle's controls at handover. Different systems operate differently, so follow the provider's explanation and the vehicle manual rather than generic online advice.

Make the booking unambiguous

Share hotel names, entrance pins, travel dates and any written access warnings. Ask for a category that meets those requirements and confirm what happens if the itinerary changes.

Avoid selecting solely by a photograph of a model. The reservation category and written confirmation are more useful than the visual appearance of the example vehicle.

Before you go

  • Share every hotel entrance and access requirement.
  • Confirm passenger, luggage and equipment capacity.
  • Verify drivetrain rather than relying on the SUV label.
  • Review the actual booking terms before collection.
