Let the location set the rules

Protected areas, public beaches and private attractions can have different instructions. Read signs and ask staff about permitted access, hours and activities.

Use established paths and parking. Do not drive on sand or enter a closed road because another visitor has done so.

Give wildlife space

Observe animals without feeding, touching or cornering them. Keep food and loose items secure, and use a guide when interpretation or access is important to the experience.

A close photograph is not worth changing an animal's behavior. Keep your expectations flexible: a natural setting does not guarantee a particular sighting.

Choose marine and beach activities thoughtfully

Ask an established operator about conditions, equipment and the suitability of the activity for your group. Follow crew and park-staff instructions.

Check swimming conditions locally and respect flags or closures. A calm-looking patch of water and the presence of surfers do not prove it is appropriate for everyone to enter.

Keep the outing light on the place

Take your belongings and rubbish with you, and use facilities as directed. Avoid blocking residents' entrances or narrow roads when parking.

Support local businesses and ask before photographing people at close range. A good road trip leaves room to learn how a place works, instead of treating every stop only as a backdrop.
