Save exact entrances
Enter the actual accommodation or attraction entrance, not only a town name. Large properties can have a staff gate, trail entrance and guest reception in different places. Ask the host which pin guests should use.
Check that similarly named destinations are in the correct region. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, for example, imply different routes.
Review the entire route while parked
Look at the main roads and the final approach before starting. If the suggested route differs from the host's recommendation, ask why before accepting it.
An application optimizes according to its available information. It may not know the vehicle's clearance, a private-road restriction or a recent deterioration after rain.
Prepare for a connection gap
Download the relevant offline map areas using an app that supports them and save written directions separately. Keep a charging cable and a suitable phone holder ready.
Check what offline mode actually provides before relying on it. Live traffic, new closures and some route updates require connectivity; an offline map is a backup, not a current road-status service.
Handle rerouting without rushing
Let a passenger review a new suggestion or stop safely to inspect it. Do not change lanes abruptly or handle the phone while moving.
If a detour points onto an unfamiliar narrow or unpaved road, confirm suitability before continuing. Follow official closure instructions even when the app still displays the original route. Share a useful landmark with your host if you need help finding the final entrance.
Before you go
- Review the full route while parked.
- Confirm current conditions and hotel access.
- Allow time for breaks and delays.
- Save the rental company's assistance contact.
