Mountain Driving in Costa Rica: Curves, Fog & Steep Hotel Roads

Read the terrain, not only the distance

Mountain roads can require substantial time even when destinations look close. Curves, gradients, slow vehicles and limited passing opportunities set the pace. Plan one major transfer instead of several fixed appointments along the route.

Check whether your hotel entrance is on the main road or reached by a smaller climbing road.

Use daylight and smooth control

Start early enough to complete the final approach in daylight. Drive at a speed that lets you respond within what you can see, especially near bends and crests.

Use the vehicle's appropriate gear or descent setting as explained at handover and in the manual. If you are unfamiliar with the controls, ask before leaving the rental office rather than experimenting on a steep slope.

Keep fog and rain in the plan

A clear valley can lead into mist higher up. Reduce speed and use lights appropriate to the conditions. Leave extra room, and never overtake where you cannot see a safe space to complete the maneuver.

When visibility becomes inadequate, look for a safe designated stopping place. Avoid pulling into a travel lane or a location where approaching drivers cannot see you.

Ask the driveway questions

Request current information about slope, surface, width and turning space. Ask whether higher clearance is sufficient or four-wheel drive is specifically required for the travel dates.

If the access feels unsuitable when you arrive, stop before committing to the difficult section and contact the host. A pickup from a safe meeting point is better than continuing into a road beyond the vehicle or your comfort level.
