Treat these as separate mountain destinations

La Fortuna and Monteverde offer different experiences and different road approaches. Being part of the same popular itinerary does not make them adjacent or interchangeable.

Choose the first stop according to your flight schedule, accommodation and the direction of the rest of the trip. Do not select a route based only on a straight line across the map.

Finish arrival tasks before committing to a long drive

Collect baggage, complete the rental handover and review how you feel after the flight. If the day has run late, a Central Valley overnight can be a better start than pushing into unfamiliar hills.

Keep the first hotel informed about your expected arrival and confirm any late check-in arrangement. An activity reservation should not pressure you to rush the approach.

Ask for destination-specific directions

For La Fortuna, check the recommended route from your actual collection point. For Monteverde, confirm the highland approach and recent access conditions directly with the host. Navigation may offer alternatives with different surface quality and gradients.

Ask about the final driveway, not merely whether the town is accessible. Higher clearance can be useful on mixed roads; four-wheel drive is a separate requirement that should be tied to the actual property.

Settle in before exploring

Refuel and organize essentials before remote sections. Plan a break somewhere established and keep bags secure. Rain, mist and slow traffic can affect the journey, so leave the first evening open.

Use the next morning for the cloud forest, volcano scenery or another reserved experience. You will have more flexibility and a better sense of the local weather after a night at the destination.

Before you go

  • Save the confirmed pickup or return instructions offline.
  • Check the airport code and the rental location.
  • Allow time for luggage and vehicle handover.
  • Keep the first or final drive realistic.
