Slow down on the peninsula
Montezuma is a small coastal base for waterfall outings, beach time and the southern Nicoya Peninsula. It is best enjoyed with several nights rather than as a rushed detour between distant destinations. Stay in or near town for convenient meals, or confirm the driveway and evening transport for a more secluded lodge.
A car helps with the journey and selected outings, but narrow local roads and parking mean that walking may be preferable once you have settled in.
Plan the crossing as part of the journey
From the Central Valley, compare a Puntarenas–Paquera vehicle-ferry journey with the full road route around the gulf. The best choice depends on your date, starting point and ferry availability. A ferry journey includes driving to the port, check-in, loading, sailing and the onward road.
Check the operator's current timetable and vehicle-ticket instructions directly before fixing the day. Do not assume the next departure has room for your vehicle. Keep a realistic alternative if you miss the intended sailing, and confirm the exact port in navigation.
The final road deserves daylight
The onward approach passes through the peninsula toward Cóbano and Montezuma. Local curves, road surfaces and property entrances can make progress slower than the map suggests. Ask the host which approach to use in your season.
Avoid following an improvised coastal shortcut or an unverified water crossing. Refuel before the final rural stretch and arrive with enough daylight to find the parking entrance, unload and locate dinner.
Waterfalls and beach outings
Check the official or operator guidance for the particular trail you intend to use. Waterfall access can involve slippery, uneven and steep terrain. A casual description online is not a substitute for checking whether the route matches your mobility and fitness.
Avoid climbing or jumping based on what another visitor is doing. Heavy rain can change water levels quickly. Give yourself time to return before dark and choose a guided option if you are uncertain about the access.

Recommended vehicle
A higher-clearance SUV can be useful on a peninsula itinerary. Confirm whether your accommodation specifically requires 4x4 and avoid any route involving a river crossing.

A practical tip from Natural
Count the ferry as a travel block, including queues and loading. A short sailing time alone does not describe the full door-to-door journey.
