Leave room for getting there

The southern peninsula rewards a longer stay because the journey includes more than the coastal distance suggests. This version starts with a night near SJO and finishes with another, protecting both the arrival and the flight home.

Days 1–2: Arrival and peninsula transfer

Stay near the airport on Day 1. On Day 2, use the confirmed rental arrangement and travel toward the peninsula. Compare the ferry with the road alternative and check the operator's current timetable and vehicle booking process.

Include port check-in and the road after Paquera. Arrive at Santa Teresa in daylight if practical.

Days 3–4: Santa Teresa

Spend three nights total in Santa Teresa, using the two full days for surf instruction, beach time or a locally operated activity. Choose outings according to ability and conditions.

Avoid moving the car for every meal if your accommodation allows a convenient local routine. Keep board transport and parking within the rental terms.

Days 5–6: Montezuma

Move to Montezuma on Day 5 for two nights. Confirm the recommended road through the peninsula rather than taking an unverified coastal shortcut.

On Day 6, choose a waterfall or nature outing after checking access and conditions. Do not assume a trail is easy because the waterfall appears close to town.

Days 7–8: Return to the Central Valley

Dedicate Day 7 to returning toward SJO. If using the ferry, keep a contingency for queues or a changed sailing. Stay near the airport that night.

Return the vehicle and fly home on Day 8. If the peninsula feels like enough for the whole trip, keep these two bases rather than adding a distant national park.

Before you go

  • Confirm every hotel's guest entrance and parking.
  • Reserve important activities on full destination days.
  • Check current road, park and ferry conditions as applicable.
  • Protect the final airport transfer.
