Compare complete journeys

A vehicle ferry can form part of a route between Puntarenas and the southern Nicoya Peninsula. Compare it with the full road route based on your starting point and destination.

Include the drive to the port, check-in, queue, loading, sailing and drive after arrival. The sailing duration alone is not the transfer time.

Confirm the operator's current details

Use the operator's own timetable and booking instructions for your date. Verify the departure and arrival ports, vehicle category, passenger details and required arrival time.

Ask how a booking is handled if your flight or drive is delayed. Keep a backup plan rather than assuming the next departure will have room.

Prepare before joining the queue

Keep tickets, identification and any required vehicle information accessible. Use designated waiting areas and follow staff directions for boarding and parking.

Take the essentials you may need during the crossing, according to the operator's instructions about passenger areas and access to the vehicle. Keep small belongings organized so unloading does not begin with a search.

Leave room for the road after the ferry

Paquera is not Santa Teresa or Montezuma. The onward drive is a separate part of the day and can include changing road conditions and a difficult final lodge entrance.

Aim to complete that drive in daylight and ask the host for current approach advice. Avoid accepting unverified coastal shortcuts or river crossings. If the ferry timing no longer works, reconsider the day instead of rushing the last section.

Before you go

  • Review the full route while parked.
  • Confirm current conditions and hotel access.
  • Allow time for breaks and delays.
  • Save the rental company's assistance contact.
