Choose the right part of the coast

Santa Teresa is a spread-out coastal destination where your hotel location shapes the daily experience. A central stay may simplify access to food and the beach, while a hillside property can involve a steep drive whenever you leave.

Before reserving, look at the actual entrance, parking and distance to the places you expect to visit. A property described as near the beach may still involve a road without comfortable pedestrian space.

Give the peninsula transfer a full day

From SJO, compare the vehicle ferry through Puntarenas and Paquera with the road journey around the gulf. From other destinations, the appropriate route may be different. Review the complete itinerary rather than applying the same directions to every starting point.

Ferry timing must include arrival at the port, queues and loading, plus the drive onward. Check the sailing and booking details with the operator. Keep important activities off the arrival afternoon so a delay does not turn the final drive into a race.

Local roads and the right vehicle

Road conditions can differ between the main corridor, side roads and private driveways. Dust, standing water, potholes and construction may affect different sections at different times. Get a current property recommendation before selecting a car.

A higher-clearance SUV can be useful, but a steep loose driveway may specifically require four-wheel drive. These are separate features. Never use a vehicle's category as permission to cross a river, drive on the beach or ignore a closure.

Surf days and evenings

Book instruction appropriate to your level and ask about the beach section and conditions each day. Experienced surfers in the water do not mean that swimming is safe. Arrange board transport before arriving at the rental counter.

At busy times the road is shared by pedestrians, motorcycles and other traffic. Reduce speed, leave space and use designated parking. If you plan an evening out, arrange transport so that alcohol and driving never become part of the same plan.
