Confirm the airport arrangement first

This route assumes arrival at SJO and departure from LIR. Before booking around it, confirm one-way rental availability, pickup and return locations, hours and any additional cost.

If your flight home is from SJO, add a dedicated return day or shorten the beach stay. Do not treat the airports as interchangeable.

Days 1–4: Arrival and La Fortuna

Stay near SJO on Day 1. On Day 2, drive to La Fortuna after the arranged collection and stay three nights. Use Days 3 and 4 for nature and an activity suited to your group.

Keep the schedule spacious enough for weather and travel between attractions.

Days 5–6: Monteverde

Transfer to Monteverde on Day 5 and stay two nights. Confirm the mountain approach with the hotel and aim to arrive in daylight.

Use Day 6 for the cloud forest or a related activity. Carry a warm layer and choose a nearby second stop only if time and energy permit.

Days 7–10: Tamarindo

Drive to Tamarindo on Day 7 for four nights. Give the arrival day to settling in. Use the next days for surf instruction, beaches, a local nature outing and rest.

Confirm roads before exploring remote accesses. A shorter beach outing with time for a meal is often more enjoyable than a long chain of coastal stops.

Days 11–12: LIR area and departure

Move toward the LIR area on Day 11 and stay nearby when that fits the flight schedule. Reconfirm the exact return arrangement; it must match the agreed one-way booking.

Return the car and depart on Day 12. Keep all fuel and handover steps within the planned buffer instead of adding another beach stop before the flight.

Before you go

  • Confirm every hotel's guest entrance and parking.
  • Reserve important activities on full destination days.
  • Check current road, park and ferry conditions as applicable.
  • Protect the final airport transfer.

NATURAL LOCAL ADVICE

A practical tip from Natural

Settle the SJO-to-LIR rental logistics first; the reduced backtracking only works when the return is explicitly arranged.
