Rainy-Season Driving in Costa Rica: Timing, Visibility & Road Choices

Plan around a shorter useful driving day

Rain affects a trip through visibility, traction and slower traffic rather than just the number of wet hours. Leave early for a long transfer and keep the afternoon flexible. Check the forecast for the actual route, including mountain sections, not only the destination beach.

An itinerary with fewer hotel changes gives you more freedom to wait when conditions deteriorate.

Adjust before conditions become difficult

Reduce speed smoothly, leave more space and use the vehicle's lights appropriately when visibility drops. Avoid sudden inputs and give yourself extra time before curves, junctions and bridges.

If you cannot see the road clearly, find a safe designated place to stop away from traffic. Do not stop in a live lane or under an unstable roadside slope simply to wait out a shower.

Water and closures are stopping points

Do not enter floodwater or an uncertain water crossing. You cannot judge the depth, current or condition of the road underneath from another vehicle's successful passage.

Respect barriers and official closure instructions. A navigation application may not yet know about a newly affected section, so ask the rental company or host for current local guidance.

Review the last access road

Ask a rural property whether rain changes its driveway requirements. A road that was straightforward in dry weather may be loose or slippery after a storm. Confirm a safe alternative meeting point if needed.

Keep fuel, drinking water and your contact information organized before a remote journey. A 4x4 can add traction in appropriate conditions, but it does not make flooding or closed roads passable.
